President Joe Biden marked "International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia" in a statement on Friday, a move that comes after his "Transgender Day of Visibility" proclamation earlier this year.
He is likely to issue a Pride Month proclamation soon as well because so far during his White House tenure, Biden has issued a statement each year for all three LGBT-related occasions.
'It is our shared moral responsibility to fight back against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, just as we must fight back against all hate-fueled violence'
"On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, my Administration stands in support and solidarity with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) people around the world as they seek to live full lives, free from violence and discrimination. This is a matter of human rights, plain and simple," Biden said in the statement.
"It is our shared moral responsibility to fight back against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, just as we must fight back against all hate-fueled violence, at home and abroad," the statement declares. "Today marks the 34th anniversary of when the World Health Organization made the wise and overdue decision to declassify ‘homosexuality’ as a mental disorder. That was a victory for LGBTQI+ people and human rights defenders everywhere. 30 years later, the work of equality continues. The Biden-Harris Administration is proud to be a part of it."

The conservationists are taking legal action against the South African government to protect penguins, arguing that the ministers failed to adequately protect these endangered species.

Tunisian President Karis Saied has been facing severe international backlash over a wave of arrests targeting journalists, lawyers and activists. A report by advocacy group Human Rights Watch has revealed horrifying tales from Mozambique's insurgency-hit region in the north, Cabo Delgado. The report says Al-Shabab, an Islamic State affiliate, used children as young as 13 for its attack in Cabo Delgado last week. The child soldiers deployed by Al-Shabab were seen carrying AK-style assault rifles and ammunition belts. Residents who were forced to flee the fighting recognised some of the child soldiers as their missing relatives. However, the issue of child soldiers is not unique to Mozambique. Many other African countries including Uganda, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Sudan among others have used young combatants during wars. How are these children recruited? GOP Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah told MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle that he finds it "unimaginable" that there is "a growing isolationism" in the Republican Party.
Romney, who said the U.S. and its economy are connected with the rest of the globe, suggested that Germany would have ended up running the world if America held an isolationist view in the past.
'America is putting ourselves first when we're involved in the world, when we stop bad people.'
The senator, who is not seeking re-election this year, said that he laughs at the term "America first," which he suggested usually means isolationism.
"America is putting ourselves first when we're involved in the world, when we stop bad people," he asserted.
He said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin chose to invade Poland, that would draw the U.S. into war. "Or we could walk away from NATO. In which case, Putin is gonna keep on going and going," he said. "We're safe and prosperous when the world follows the orders that have existed over the last 75 years," he said.
Ruhle asked Romney whether there is any chance Romney could potentially serve as secretary of state if President Joe Biden wins another term — the GOP senator immediately rejected the idea.
Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election to incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama, noted that he will not vote for Trump this year. He also didn't vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020.
Last month, Romney supported passage of a package that included Ukraine aid and more. "After months of needless delay, Congress has finally approved much-needed funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and the U.S. military’s operations in these key regions," he said in a statement at the time.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper admitted on Thursday that he would “absolutely” have doubts about former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s testimony if he were a member of the jury.
Cooper made the comments while speaking to CNN legal analyst Elie Honig about a notable moment during Cohen’s cross-examination the anchor described as Trump’s lawyer catching Cohen in a lie.
“Absolutely. I think it’s devastating for Michael Cohen’s credibility on this one particular topic,” Cooper told Honig when asked if he thought Cohen’s testimony about his attempted phone call to Trump was not trustworthy.
Cooper’s admission came as both pundits discussed Trump attorney Todd Blanche’s questioning of Cohen, who alleges that he paid adult film star Stormy Daniels on direct orders from then-2016 presidential candidate to conceal an affair Trump and Daniels had.
During testimony with prosecutors on Tuesday, Cohen stated that he had called Trump’s former bodyguard Keith Schiller on Oct. 24, 2016 to get in touch with Trump about the payment to Daniels.
However, as Trump’s legal team questioned Cohen on Thursday, Blanche pulled out records of text messages that Cohen sent to Schiller shortly before phone call. The text messages revealed Cohen asked to talk to Schiller about a 14-year-old prankster that was harassing him.
“Part of it was the 14-year-old … but I know Keith was with Mr. Trump,” Cohen testified.
“If I was a juror in this case watching that I would think, this guy’s making this up as he’s going along, or he’s making this particular story up,” the CNN host added.

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who just won the Republican U.S. Senate primary in the state, has said that he supports a policy of "restoring Roe v. Wade as the law of the land."
"As governor, I protected the rights of Maryland women to make their own reproductive health decisions. I will do the same in the Senate by restoring Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. No one should come between a woman and her doctor," Hogan said in a tweet.

The New York Times reported that when asked whether he considers himself pro-choice or pro-life, Hogan noted, "Given the definition of what I'm supporting — women's rights to make their own decision — I would say that's pro-choice."
Hogan, who served as Maryland's governor from early 2015 through early 2023, has never voted for Donald Trump but wrote in his father Larry Hogan Sr. in 2016 and the late President Ronald Reagan in 2020. He has said that he will not vote for Trump or Biden this year.
Hogan has been appealing to Democrats for support.
"I am excited to launch Democrats for Hogan and have my good friend and former Democratic State Senator Bobby Zirkin on our team," Hogan said in a tweet.

The situation erupted shortly after GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said she wanted to know whether any committee Democrats "are employing, ah, Judge Merchan's daughter."
Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas questioned whether Greene knew why they were there.
Greene made a crack to Crockett about "fake eyelashes."
Ocasio-Cortez moved to "take down Ms. Greene's words" and then proceeded to berate Greene. "That is absolutely unacceptable," she declared. "How dare you," she continued, "attack the physical appearance of another person?"
"Are your feelings hurt?" Greene asked. "Awwww."
"Oh girl, baby girl, don't even play," Ocasio-Cortez said.
Later, while Greene agreed to strike her words, she declared, "I am not apologizing."
Greene, apparently speaking to Ocasio-Cortez, asked the Democrat why she doesn't debate her. "You don't have enough intelligence," Greene declared.
Later during the bizarre saga, Crockett asked Comer, "I'm just curious, just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody's bleach blonde bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?"
Crockett said in in a tweet, "So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?! It's against the rules to do… She refused to apologize! The chairman ruled that it was ok… AND I asked for clarification about what qualifies as 'engaging in personalities' & basically wanted to know if I could talk s[***] about her appearance as… well… y’all know what she looks like, right? PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES! This is what happens when mentally deficient people who can’t read and follow rules or just don't give a damn… somehow end up in CONGRESS!"

Surveillance video captured the moment a thug tried to ambush a couple that was walking their dog in New York City but ended up getting stabbed in the head when they fought back.
The New York Police Department said the alleged assailant followed the couple and their dog at about 2:45 p.m. on Thursday near 49th and Broadway in Queens before he attacked them.
The NYPD said the 37-year-old suspect was transported to the Elmhurst Hospital for treatment over the numerous stab wounds.
Video of the daylight attack was obtained by the New York Post.
Video shows the suspect tossing his coat on the ground and jumping on the man, who is riding a scooter due to a foot injury.
Rather than capitulate, the couple immediately attacked the man and beat him with their fists. The attacker tried to escape, but they continued to hammer him with punches and kicks, even while holding on to a dog leash. The victim was able to put the assailant in a headlock as the woman hit him.
Eventually, the couple separated themselves from the suspect, but they yelled at each other, threatening to re-engage. At one point, a grievous wound could be seen on the assailant's head.
At that point, bystanders who had been casually watching then stepped in to keep them apart.
The NYPD said the 37-year-old suspect was transported to the Elmhurst Hospital for treatment over the numerous stab wounds. He was listed in critical but stable condition.
Photos of police investigating the incident showed that it happened in front of a taco restaurant.
Sources told the New York Post that police are searching for the couple involved in the fight. No arrests have been made.
It is unclear whether the assailant knew the couple or whether the incident was a random attack.
The violent crime rate in New York City is slightly lower than that of the national crime rate. Other cities like Los Angeles, California, have a much higher violent crime rate than New York City.

As protests escalate on college campuses and dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s handling of Israeli issues grows, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) has launched an unprecedented fundraising effort.
The initiative marks the largest in the RJC’s history, with a minimum target of $5 million, and is set to significantly boost former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign according to Fox News. The RJC is a prominent grassroots organization representing Jewish Republicans across the United States. The group’s national political director, Sam Markstein, highlighted the commitment, stating that the effort will be “the RJC’s largest effort ever to mobilize support in the Jewish community for President Trump.”
The fundraising drive is in addition to a $15 million independent expenditure. The move comes amid weeks of protests on college campuses nationwide, sparked by Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Video game company Activision Blizzard allegedly pushes employees to participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and installs diversity officers to ensure DEI compliance for each video game.
Former Blizzard designer Mark Kern posted an allegedly leaked internal document that showed the studio — which develops popular titles like World of Warcraft and Call of Duty — has been pushing its extensive DEI work on its employees.
'Together, we will build a future that embraces diversity, fosters inclusivity, and empowers all.'
Kern also made other alarming claims that he said came from sources inside the company.
"I've been shocked at what my former co-workers have told me about Activision Blizzard. It's a very different place from what it used to be, when the games were better and we left politics out of it," he told Blaze News.
"Blizzard now has struggle sessions where white developers must discuss their privilege, and DEI emails go out every week. 'Non-mandatory' meetings that are clearly and openly mandatory, and now, review forms that have you rate how well you DEI/ESG."
"I've been told nearly every game design decision at Activision has to be run by DEI officers (their official title) that sit on the teams themselves. I hope that hasn't reached Blizzard itself, but I fear the worst," he added.
Activision representative Delaney Simmons did not address any of the above claims when asked by Blaze News. Among other questions, the spokesperson was asked about the alleged sessions and whether participation in DEI programs affects an employee's job standing. In the alleged leaked email, said to be company-wide, Activision Blizzard shouts from the mountain tops about its DEI work.
The document was sent to Kern as an alleged internal leak, but Activision's Simmons told Blaze News that it was not "a leak," and then pointed to the company's 2023-2024 Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Report.
In the document, the studio boasted about its curation of "meaningful DE&I focused learning opportunities" and the creation of the "IGD council."
The acronym stands for "Inclusive Game Design," which later led to the company creating an IGD team.
According to its website, the Activision Blizzard IGD team is responsible for "embedding advocates, best practices, and innovations" in all the company's games.
This is to "ensure that our games are the most diverse, welcoming, and inclusive."
The apparent newsletter also bragged about working with "Minority-owned Businesses [sic] Enterprises" before thanking readers for their support in their dedication to "holistic inclusivity."
"Together, we will build a future that embraces diversity, fosters inclusivity, and empowers all," the letter closed. The document was signed by Casey Morris, the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion officer.
The DEI infusion did not end there by any stretch of the imagination. The company promoted a series of strange "employee networks" that are based on race or sexuality. These included "the black employee network," the "LGBT+ employee network," and the "multicultural employee network."
The company has even stated in its report that it introduced an "inclusion score" for its employees. The score represents "a quantitative measure of the extent to which employees feel welcomed, valued, and included within the organization."
This was used as a justification for the company collecting "DE&I Data," which means tracking race, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. Company data showed that it is over 60% white and 79% male.
Only 1% identified as nonbinary.

Police are investigating the discovery of a video camera pointed at the toilet in a public bathroom at a clinic in California.
A worker at the Joint Chiropractic on the McBean Parkway in Valencia found the camera taped in a cabinet in the bathroom and reported it to the front desk. The worker spoke to KTLA-TV but didn't want to be identified publicly.
'They were definitely aiming to record people using the bathroom, people’s private parts.'
“I kind of freaked out, like what is this?” she said. “I took pictures and put it in my pocket and went to the front desk.”
She said that it was connected to a power bank and was likely feeding live video to the pervert who put it there.
“It was like 3 by 3, so really tiny and black, so it blended in pretty well,” she explained. “I didn’t know what to do at that point.”
The bathroom is used by the staff and patients at the office, both men and women, and occasionally children.
“Kids go in that bathroom,” she continued. “Women, men, a mix of people go in that bathroom. I don’t know why someone would do this.”
The incident is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a possible invasion of privacy.
“It was pointed directly at the toilet, so they were definitely aiming to record people using the bathroom, people’s private parts,” the woman added.
The business released a brief statement about the incident:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that even if President Biden makes good on his threat to withhold some weapons from the Jewish state, they will press forward with their offensive in Gaza anyway.
Biden recently took a strong stance against a potential Israeli invasion of the city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are believed to be taking shelter, announcing that the U.S. will not provide Israel with any offensive weapons for such an effort.
However, Netanyahu said in a statement that they are prepared to take action even without American support, insisting that “if we have to stand alone, we will stand alone. If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than our fingernails, and with that strength of spirit, with God’s help, together we shall be victorious.”
The country’s top military spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, claims that America’s weapons are not needed anyway, saying: “The army has munitions for the missions it plans, and for the missions in Rafah, too — we have what we need.”
It is believed that around 1.3 million Palestinians are currently seeking refuge in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, which amounts to more than half of the enclave’s population. Gaza is already suffering from a devastating humanitarian crisis, and much of the world is opposed to an invasion there. According to the UN, most Palestinians in Gaza are suffering from hunger, with northern Gaza already in the throes of a full-blown famine. Given that even smaller Israeli operations, such as a tank brigade recently capturing the Gazan side of a border crossing in Rafah, have been enough to seriously compromise humanitarian operations, a full-scale invasion could be the final straw.
The Biden administration maintains that it will not support a major invasion of Rafah without a credible plan in place to ensure the safety of noncombatants. In an interview with CNN, Biden admitted that some of the American weapons that have been sent to Israel have been used to kill Gazan civilians.
“Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers,” he said.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah – they haven’t gone in Rafah yet – if they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities – that deal with that problem,” he added.
However, he said America remains committed to providing Israel with defensive weapons such as the Iron Dome air defense system.
For its part, Israel continues to insist that going into Rafah is necessary because it is a Hamas stronghold, and they have already started warning some people in the eastern part of the city to “evacuate immediately” ahead of an impending military operation there.

A home intruder was stabbed to death after he allegedly shot a Florida man's wife in the face, according to police.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Thursday at about 8:30 p.m. at a home on Joe Hilton Street in Avon Park, according to the Highlands County Sheriff's Dept.
Police said they responded to reports of a suspicious incident at the home and found two victims, both 69 years of age, with what they described as serious injuries.
'I would like to commend the male victim for his bravery and quick action in defending his wife in their home.'
The husband of the home told them that a man had "used a ruse to gain entry" to the home based on his wife's job as a notary. Once the man was inside the house, he took out a gun and shot the man's wife in the face.
After seeing his wife be shot, the man armed himself with what is being described as a seven-inch garden knife and stabbed the man to death.
Police later identified the alleged home intruder as 62-year-old Lindsey Glenn.
“Once armed with the knife, he went to work on Mr. Lindsey Glenn,” said Sheriff Paul Blackman at a media briefing. "Ultimately, the suspect, Lindsey Glenn, was cut to pieces and was very much deceased by the time deputies could get to him."
Blackman said that Glenn had been previously sent to prison at least six times after being convicted of 12 different felonies. The Sheriff's Office said they believe that Glenn might have thought the couple had money at home because of her job as a notary.
"I would like to commend the male victim for his bravery and quick action in defending his wife in their home," Blackman said. "We will pray for his wife that she has a fast and full recovery."
The man's wife was transported to a trauma center, where she was treated and remains in stable condition. The husband was treated for his injuries at a hospital and released.
Police said that the incident remains under investigation.

When Jase Anderson was a young buck, he once ran into a little bit of trouble.
When he befriended a girl who had a boyfriend, he thought they were just friends — but she thought differently. Then, the boyfriend caught wind of it.
“She asked me to come over for the Bible study, and next thing you know, I’m dragged and whooped over basically my faith because I was there for a Bible study,” Jase explains, adding, “But the good news is he came to the Lord a couple weeks later. The girl, she got alienated, and we went on about our merry way.”
“I was at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I was there at the right time to bring him to the Lord,” he says.
“You took a beating for the gospel,” Zach laughs.
“I did not fight back. Only in words and in the Spirit,” Jase says while Zach continues poking fun.
“You didn’t give him the right hand of fellowship,” Zach jokes.
“I decided to preach the Gospel to him, thinking that would avoid the beating, but that didn’t materialize. But it did work out. It was a weird phenomenon that happened in my life,” Jase says.
Now, the two are friends — and his former attacker has even helped him out with his ministry.
“We’re friends; we’re brothers,” Jase says.

An illegal alien has allegedly raped two Southern California women in as many days, yet officials have not yet clarified whether the suspect faces an immigration detainer as a result.
At around 10 p.m. on Monday, deputies arrested Eduardo Sarabia, a 40-year-old Mexican national reportedly in the U.S. illegally, after he was caught inside a white 2015 Ford Transit van parked along a remote stretch of Highway 39 near Azusa, about 20 miles east of L.A., as Blaze News previously reported.
Neither the bulletin nor the press release from the DA's office mentioned Sarabia's immigration status or a possible immigration detainer.
A 26-year-old woman was also allegedly found inside the van, which deputies described as a "rape dungeon on wheels" and "disgustingly outfitted for rape." Through their investigations, deputies discovered that Sarabia had allegedly sexually assaulted another woman in the same van parked at about the same spot just 24 hours earlier.
The "outfitted" van and other evidence have convinced investigators that Sarabia likely assaulted other women as well. "Based on the nature of the allegations, detectives believe there may be additional unidentified victims," said a bulletin about Sarabia's arrest from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
"I want to emphasize that this is an ongoing investigation, and there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward," added a statement from Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón. "I urge anyone who has been affected by similar incidents to contact law enforcement and seek available resources."
The bulletin from the sheriff's office described the suspect as "Hispanic," but neither the bulletin nor the press release from the DA's office mentioned Sarabia's immigration status or a possible immigration detainer.
Sarabia, who has been called a suspected "serial rapist," was arrested and charged with one count of forcible rape and one count of forcible oral copulation, both felonies. If convicted, he would face life in prison. He remains in custody without bail and has an arraignment hearing scheduled for June 27.
"As District Attorney, it is my solemn duty to pursue justice for victims of violent crimes, especially those involving sexual assault," Gascón's statement added. "The horrific and violent sexual assault that these two survivors endured by the alleged suspect is deeply troubling and incomprehensible. Our thoughts are with the victims during this tremendously difficult time."
Blaze News reached out to the ICE field office in Los Angeles to find out whether an immigration detainer has been assessed against Sarabia, but the agency did not respond to our call.

As the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984, Fauci has overseen numerous public health crises, from HIV/AIDS to Ebola. However, his involvement in the COVID-19 pandemic has been the most contentious period of his career, with significant public debate and controversy surrounding his actions and statements. Some critics have gone so far as to suggest that Fauci should be prosecuted and jailed for his role in the pandemic.
Early Life and CareerAnthony Stephen Fauci was born on December 24, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. He pursued a medical degree at Cornell University Medical College, graduating first in his class in 1966. Fauci joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1968, embarking on a career dedicated to infectious diseases and immunology. When you pull away the layers and see what was really going on and knowing he lied to the world about so many things, his “legacy” will be scarred forever.
In City Journal, conservative activist and author Chris Rufo takes aim at the leadership of secure messaging app Signal, asking: “Is the integrity of the encrypted-messaging application compromised by its chairman of the board?” This article follows in a line of recent criticism of embattled NPR CEO Katherine Maher, who chairs the Signal Foundation board, and Signal Foundation President Meredith Whittaker. The article also raises concerns — echoed by Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey — about the app's trustworthiness, given its links to left-wing activists and U.S. government seed funding.
While we share Rufo’s concerns about Signal's leadership's outspoken leftist views and activism, we disagree with his alarmism over the app's core security and broad mischaracterization of internet freedom programs as vectors for domestic surveillance and censorship.
In contrast with Signal’s aloof anarchist founder, Moxie Marlinspike, Meredith Whittaker and Katherine Maher are both unapologetic progressive activists with radical views on the information ecosystem, online speech, and what values the tech industry should support. Before Signal, Whittaker was notable as a lead instigator of employee walkouts and activism at Google, attempting to stop the company from working with the Pentagon and leading an effort to purge then-Heritage Foundation President Kay Coles James from its AI advisory board.
Maher, who previously worked at Wikimedia Foundation, Web Summit, and progressive advocacy group Access Now, has a similar ideological record. As Reason magazine puts it:
Maher's past tweets would be hard to distinguish from satire if one randomly stumbled across them. Her earnest, uncompromising wokeness — land acknowledgments, condemnations of Western holidays, and so on — sounds like they were written by parody accounts such as The Babylon Bee or Titania McGrath.Here, Rufo’s criticism is entirely fair, and Signal’s board would likely benefit from picking less controversial leaders while fostering intellectual diversity to reflect its global user base better.
Enemies of your enemiesBut the fact that Signal is run by an outspoken anti-government, anti-corporate, privacy maximalist like Whittaker, who built her career opposing collaboration between tech and government, also makes it an unlikely tool of the surveillance state (not to mention that an avowed anarchist founded it). Rather than being evidence of any particular conspiracy, the involvement of leftists like Maher and Whittaker is best explained as a reflection of tech’s coastal elite cultural bubble.
Let’s look closer at Signal’s alleged ties to the government. Open Whisper Systems, the initial developer of its protocol, received a series of seed grants from a State Department-funded initiative called the Open Technology Fund, a nonprofit that gives grants to support open-source internet freedom projects. OWS was later dissolved and incorporated under the Signal Foundation. However, its open-source encryption protocol was widely adopted, vetted by security researchers, and integrated into apps including Facebook Messenger, Skype, and WhatsApp.
The OTF’s programs have supported numerous internet freedom tools, including virtual private networks, the Signal protocol, and Tor. What’s more, other government funding programs have supported the creation of the internet, GPS, and the core technologies in our smartphones, as do Silicon Valley giants like Intel, Tesla, Qualcomm, Apple, and Google.
The federal government has many legitimate policy interests in funding technology tools unrelated to surveillance, including foreign policy, geopolitical security, and economic competitiveness. In particular, the U.S. government’s internet freedom programs are directly from Cold War-era anti-communist radio and television.

Today, these tools lend support to journalists, opposition parties, and dissident movements operating under authoritarian regimes like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. For instance, during the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, Signal rocketed to become the number-one downloaded app. Similarly, Signal usage has surged during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Used in concert with VPNs, secure messaging access is a powerful freedom tool. Citing an anonymous source, Rufo’s article asserts the State Department and OTF “wield open source internet projects made by hacker communities as tools for American foreign policy goals.” Indeed. This is a feature, not a bug.
The OTF has its origins in a project of Radio Free Asia, the sister organization to Radio Free Europe, set up in response to the Tiananmen Square massacre and the growing threat of communism in Asia. Later, the OTF was spun off under the Trump administration as an independent nonprofit funded by the U.S. Agency for Global Media and chartered by Congress under 22 U.S.C. § 6208a. With a mission to “advance internet freedom in repressive environments by supporting … technologies that counter censorship and combat repressive surveillance to enable all citizens to exercise their fundamental human rights online,” the OTF is at the tip of the spear, helping support pro-freedom movements worldwide.
In the 20th century, America used radio and television broadcasts to spread freedom behind the Iron Curtain. In the 21st century, the OTF is breaking the Great Firewall and allowing people living in authoritarian states to access free and open information from around the world. The OTF’s funding of internet freedom projects such as VPNs, Tor, and yes, Signal, is intended to ensure that journalists and dissidents have “unrestricted access to uncensored sources of information via the internet.” To guarantee communications security over the technologies it supports, the OTF is legally required only to support fully open-source and auditable technologies. The OTF’s authorizing statute requires “comprehensive security audits to ensure that such technologies are secure and have not been compromised.”
If this isn’t enough, any attempt by the government to embed a secret back door would also have to get past its robust technical community and global security researchers, who can review and verify its source code on Github. Maher, a non-technical executive who joined the board in 2023, is unlikely to have had any involvement in its codebase.
For federal agencies like the State Department, knowledge of a back door would trigger the Vulnerability Equities Process, which requires federal entities, including law enforcement and intelligence agencies, to undergo independent review and disclose known exploits under certain circumstances where there is a significant risk of abuse by foreign governments, criminals, and other bad actors. On the black market, Russia-backed hackers are offering as much as $1.5 million for a Signal zero-day vulnerability.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidenceTo argue that Signal is insecure or untrustworthy because of indirect funding from the State Department is to fundamentally misunderstand the origins, mission, and practices of both Signal and the U.S.’ internet freedom programs. Critically, such thinking risks pushing people to far less secure alternatives like Telegram, SMS, and iMessage. While Telegram’s CEO has been an avid Signal critic, messages on its platform are still not encrypted by default. In addition to being open source and end-to-end encrypted, Signal has the added benefits of encrypting metadata, obscuring phone numbers, and employing quantum-resistant cryptography.
Internet freedom programs and their analog predecessors have historically enjoyed strong bipartisan support, including Republican champions like Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan. Here, Rufo’s criticism should be a warning to internet freedom advocates against placing lightning-rod activists in leadership or cultivating a partisan ideological monoculture.
Considering the federal government’s long history of abusing surveillance tools — from J. Edgar Hoover to the Patriot Act — a base level of skepticism or even paranoia is understandable. Civil liberties proponents on both sides of the aisle are right to question and challenge the security of their communication platforms, including Signal. However, as an indirect instrument of U.S. policy, Signal's role extends beyond just an app for secure messaging; it bolsters American values and safeguards the freedoms that define open societies.
Because it was created as open-source software designed to minimize what it collects and operate on hostile servers, who’s on its board or where its funding came from actually don’t matter that much. What matters is how it gets used in the world. On this count, Signal — and related programs like Tor, VPNs, and the OTF — have been a massive policy success and a worthy digital successor of programs efforts that helped bring down the Berlin Wall and end the Soviet Union.

The professional gossipers on Walt Disney Company's "The View" joined other liberals in a state of apoplexy this week over Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker's recent pro-family, pro-mother, and pro-life comments.
One of the co-hosts most prickled by Butker's expression of popular conservative Christian beliefs and criticism of President Joe Biden was Sara Haines, a self-described "slightly left leaning moderate."
'This is a very extreme religion.'
Former comedian Whoopi Goldberg starting things off with an uncharacteristic defense of dissenting views, attempting a comparison between the three-time Super Bowl champ's commencement speech at Benedictine College and former Super Bowl participant Colin Kaepernick's protest on the field.
"Listen, I like when people say what they need to say. He's at a Catholic college. He's a staunch Catholic. These are his beliefs and he's welcome to 'em," said Goldberg. "I don't have to believe 'em. I don't have to accept them. … The same way we want respect when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee, we want to give respect to people whose ideas are different from ours."
Haines responded, "In the spirit of freedom of speech, I don't want people shut down or fired for things they are willing to say. I will break with you on the comparison to Colin Kaepernick for this reason: Colin Kaepernick was standing up for the rights of many and saying in a social justice moment, 'This is a reminder that we're not there yet.'"
Haines evidently discounted Butker's apparent willingness to speak up for the rights of the estimated 87,000-92,000 human beings executed every month in the United States.
"What this man is doing is not just a devout Catholic," continued Haines. "This is someone who is practicing something called the Traditional Latin Mass, which is divergent from the majority of Catholics. It's compared to being cult-like and extremist like some religions in the Middle East and Asia."
"This is a very extreme religion," added Haines.
The Traditional Latin Mass, also known as the Tridentine Mass or the Traditional Rite, is a liturgical celebration using the Roman Missal of 1962 that Pope John Paul II signed off on and was again cleared for use by Pope Benedict XVI in his 2007 apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum.
Pope Benedict XVI noted the two expressions of the rule of prayer found in the Second Vatican Council-era Roman Missal promulgated by Pope Paul VI and in the Roman Missal previously promulgated by Pope Pius V then revised by Pope John XXIII "will in no way lead to a division in the Church's lex credendi (rule of faith); for they are two usages of the one Roman rite."
In other words, neither the rules of prayer nor the rules of faith in the TLM are "divergent" from the Ordinary Form of the Mass with which most practicing Catholics are familiar.
"It is therefore permitted to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal, which was promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Church’s Liturgy," wrote the Roman pontiff.
In the TLM, the priest faces the altar during the celebration along with the rest of the faithful. The Catholic News Agency noted that "[s]ome prayers are different, some prayers are expanded, and some prayers and responses are limited to the priest or those serving at the altar. Traditional Latin Mass communities follow a different liturgical calendar, too."
Pope Francis has introduced stringent regulations for the TLM in the document "Traditionis custodes," but it contnues to be practiced around the world in those dioceses where bishops have granted permission.
Haines' suggestion that the TLM is "cult-like" effectively amounts to a smear against traditional adherents worldwide as well as the historical celebration Catholic Mass predating the 1960s.
Haines' attack on Butker also hinges on the erroneous presumption that his comments are informed by his participation in the TLM as opposed to the church's moral teaching, which has been codified in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and reiterated countless times by both the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
In fact, Butker's comments about abortion and euthanasia align almost verbatim with the church's April document " Dignitas Infinita," which reiterates, that "all offenses against life itself, such as murder, genocide, abortion, euthanasia, and willful suicide' must be recognized as contrary to human dignity."
Haines still had more to say.
"And what bothers me about that as a Christian is that when people abuse Christianity, they often not only cherry pick from the Bible, they misinterpret and lie by omission, by taking out parts that would have explained something a little better," said the co-host.
"So, what I can say to [Butker], as a Christian, is if you're using this to oppress people or hold them down you're not walking with Jesus. If you are using the religion, if you're more obsessed with the religious rituals and practices than you are with the word of Jesus, you're not walking with Jesus. And if you're using it for the judgment of others and as a weapon to beat people down you're also not walking with Jesus," said Haines.
"So, I would really encourage him, really encourage him to find the best parts of faith and not diverge into extremist beliefs," concluded the TV personality, clasping her hands as if in prayer.
— (@)While Haines' comment resonated poorly with various Catholics, others seized on another critique baked into her rant.
Billy Gribbin, communications director for Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), said, "Hey @sarahaines, please expand on what's wrong with 'some religions in the Middle East.' Fascinated to know what you mean by that."
